The NCC works to expand and improve access to library resources and information about Japan, through collaboration with institutions and organizations in North America, Japan, and elsewhere.

NCC coordinates projects to cooperatively develop Japanese collections and articulate the information needs of librarians, scholars, and : Kai Okada. The library pays special attention to building special collections such as film and LGBTQ ephemera collections.

There is occasional acquisition of pre imprints that contribute to the uniqueness of the collection as well as a deeper understanding of the subjects covered and the history of the book among Japanese studies scholars.

The Library's Pre-Meiji collection includes a rare manuscript, "Kabuki Sugatami," written by kabuki actor Nakamura Nakazo in The actor's manuscript is a valuable source for the study of kabuki and its history. Washington Evening Star editor Crosby Noyes was far from alone in his fascination with Japanese art.

Japanese manuscripts and rare books are consulted at the Bodleian Japanese Library. English-language material and transliterated Japanese material can be found in the Weston Library.
